A 500 W motor suits level streets, moderate loads, and controlled daily trips. Choose 750 W when hills, groceries, or heavier riders are common. The higher rating can provide stronger acceleration and less strain during climbs. However, motor output depends on the controller, gearing, wheel size, and battery discharge capability. A powerful motor with a weak battery may feel disappointing. I have found that tire pressure also changes handling and range more than many buyers expect.
Check the battery’s continuous current rating before purchase. A 48 V battery should support the motor without excessive voltage drop. Ask whether the stated motor power is nominal or peak power. Peak numbers can look impressive but may last only briefly. A longer range is not always better if the battery adds excessive weight. My early estimates often ignored stop-and-go traffic.
